The stainless steel used in 316L Heat Exchanger Pipes is a chromium-nickel-based, molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel with improved resistance to a number of compounds, owing to the inclusion of molybdenum to help prevent chloride corrosion. Low carbon is represented by the letter L in 316L. L-grades have a net carbon content of 0.035 percent. In short-term conditions or heat therapies, L-grades are resistant to sensitization. L-grade stainless steel has lower minimum strengths than ordinary stainless steel (typically 5,000 psi lower). Because of the marginally higher molybdenum and nickel content, Grade 316L is a better version of SS 304. Because of the molybdenum, SS 316L is more corrosion resistant in certain hostile conditions, with particular tolerance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion in acidic environments.

In contrast to other stainless steels, SS 316L has been found to be more suitable in environments of high or elevated temperatures. It has a higher heat tolerance than Type 304, but much of the same common concepts. The corrosion resistance of 316L is particularly good against chemicals used in the textile and paper sectors. Food manufacturing machines, chemical processing, nuts and bolts, and medical devices are all common uses for the metal.

Although the metal is malleable when hot and cold worked, it cannot be work-hardened with heat treatment and is thus known to have poorer weldability than stainless steels of the 304 type. In terms of workability, though, 316L also outperforms all other stainless steel grades. A heat exchanger is a system that transfers heat from one fluid to another. In both cooling and heating systems, heat exchangers are used. The fluids could be isolated by a concrete wall to keep them from mixing, or they could be in close contact.
